Message from the Dean

Greetings and welcome to our website! The First Year of Studies, one of the distinctive features of the University of Notre Dame, demonstrates the University’s commitment to quality undergraduate education. Regardless of intended program, all entering first year students are members of this unit, which allows students to study broadly in the arts and sciences and to consider various possibilities before committing to a particular college or major.
Since its inception in 1962, the First Year of Studies has offered academic advising and support services to all incoming students. Committed to student success, our advising teams are a key resource during this important time of transition to college with its many challenges and responsibilities. In addition to advising, we provide assistance in writing, reading, and the many disciplines that involve solving mathematical problems.
Because of the talent and hard work of our students and the dedication of our faculty and staff, 99 percent of our students successfully finish their first year, and 97 percent return as sophomores. We are pleased to provide the supportive, yet challenging atmosphere that fosters intellectual curiosity and academic achievement. With a solid tradition of assisting students in making a successful transition from high school to the Notre Dame community, we continually strive to enhance the first year experience in creative and dynamic ways.
Please use our website to explore the programs, services, and people associated with the First Year of Studies.
Sincerely,
Hugh R. Page Jr., Ph.D.
Dean, First Year of Studies
